After 8 September 1943 Fiorenzo Magni supported the Italian Social Republic [Mussolini’s puppet government] and on 3 January 1944 he took part in the Battle of Valibona, during which many comrades were killed including Lanciotto Ballerini. Tried and cleared (thanks to an amnesty) he has never denied his adherence to the fascist side of the war. (Il Cantiere Sociale Camilo Cienfuegos)

Such local debates had an immediate effect. When the Giro stage began from Campi Bisenzio in May the same official local government publication had changed the photograph on its cover from one of Magni to the far less controversial and more classic image of Coppi and Bartali. Magni was still persona non grata in the area where he had been born, even in the twenty-first century.16 Unlike in other home towns of great cyclists (Ponte a Ema for Bartali, Castellania for Coppi, Cittiglio for Binda, Cesenatico for Pantani) Vaiano has no Magni museum, nor any reference to Magni on its website. Such an omission can only be politically motivated.
